Highlands United coach Brian Hollywood has touted teenage striker Jed Hilmi as a future leader after his hat-trick formed the backbone of United’s 3-1 win over Berkeley at Renwick Oval on Saturday.
United had another strong home round with the reserves holding the undefeated Berkeley to a 0-0 draw and the youth graders winning on a forfeit.
Hollywood was full of praise for his young players, with Duncan Urquhart unpassable at sweeper.
“Jed and Duncan at either end made a huge difference. Having Steve Ash back also helped. With him, our defence is more solid,” Hollywood said.
Goalkeeper Troy French also stood out.
“Frenchie was excellent. He came out to the ball and lifted the team,” he said.
Hilmi put United ahead 1-0 five minutes in following sustained pressure from Berkeley.
He got his second on the half-hour, before Berkeley missed a penalty and then salvaged a goal right on halftime.
The gun striker then sealed the win five minutes out from time.
