According to Exeter first grade coach Ken Rice the second grader did exactly that in the defending minor premiers 2-0 round four Highlands/Goulburn Champions League Cup at Government Road on Saturday.
“He had only one task, to sit on Matt and he did a great job, Rice said,
“I don’t think he got a shot on goal.”
Fellow second grader Nick Nienhuis also impressed with header from a Damian Strode free kick 20 minutes in to give Exeter a 1-0 halftime lead.
Ricky Doyle sealed the win midway through the second term with a great first time volley from 30 metres on the left side goal that had Robertson goalkeeper Rod Handley diving to his left but he was unable to stop the strike.
“It was a sweet strike. Those volleys normally go over the top or in,” Rice said.
Exeter won the run and gun battle of the two young teams with strode brothers Steven and Damian pushing Robertson’s defence wide all day and proving plenty of opportunities for strikers Matt Kellond and Leigh Doyle.
Robertson coach Rob Fleming said his team gifted Exeter the game. Robertson’s third loss sees them stuck in the middle of the table and Fleming said it was crucial the team picked up points in the coming weeks.
“The first 20 minutes were poor but overall we didn’t play that bad,” he said.
“We failed to finish off our opportunities. We are panicking and not backing ourselves in front of goal.
“I thought we matched it with them.”
Ben Wilson, Blake Conquest, Mark Bisby, Tristan Summers and Brendan Smith stood out for Fleming.
