COLO VALE Patris scored their first ever first grade trophy with a 3-1 win over Exeter in extra time at David Wood Playing Fields in East Bowral on Saturday.
With the match locked at 1-all at fulltime, the teams played an addition 10-minutes each way. Two goals to Patris captain-coach Tim Stone in the first half of extra time sealed the title for Colo Vale.
Stone said the win was important for his players and the club.
“Hopefully we can build up the club on the back of the win,” he said.
“Full credit to the whole team from the backs through to the midfield and up front, it was a great effort.”
Patris dominated the match from the opening whistle and peppered Exeter’s goalkeeper Marco Molino with shots from inside and outside the 18-yard box in the opening 20 minutes.
Patris’ custodian Simon McEwan didn’t touch the ball until the 26th minute and was never tested in the first half as his team continued to dominate possession and field position.
Running downhill in the second term, Exeter held their own and created some chances.
Colo Vale striker Shane Fitzpatrick opened the scoring in the 80th minute when he pounced on a loose ball inside the penalty area.
The goal spurred the minor premiers into action and they squared the match three minutes later when Ricky Doyle found space in the middle of the park.
Exeter dominated the remaining 15 minutes of play and, for the first time all match, looked likely to take the title.
But Patris held strong and pushed the game into extra time.
Colo Vale ran downhill in the first half of extra time and went two goals ahead thanks to some classy finishing by the captain.
Exeter pushed until the final whistle but they couldn’t crack Patris’ rock-solid defence.
