Bushrangers hold up title for second year in a row

14 Sep, 2009 10:34 AM
YERRINBOOL-Bargo’s third grade men’s team went back to back champions last weekend, with a nail-biting 2-1 win over Bundanoon.

The Rebels finished in fourth spot but a super run through the semi-finals saw them almost go all the way.

Bundanoon stuck it to the Bushrangers in the first half and created numerous opportunities to knock off the defending premiers.

With that kind of pressure, it was only a matter of time before they were rewarded with a goal to their left half, who was their best player on the day.

A very shell-shocked Yerrinbool side went into the second half determined to change the tide of the game and reclaim their crown.

Striker Scott Sungdren latched onto a deft throughball and worked it past the Rebels’ goalkeeper to level the scores early in the second period.

Soon after, the Bushrangers’ left half Antun, who decided to change codes and try some of his Aussie Rules skills, was rewarded with an early shower to leave Yerrinbool with only 10 men for the rest of the game.

The match ended at 1-all and headed into extra time.

In extra time, the Bushrangers lifted and strung some passes together to pile the pressure onto the Rebels.

Once again, it was Sungdren down the right side of the field who passed to Grant Bennett in the center.

Bennett slotted the ball into the back of the net to give the defending champions a 2-1 lead.

And that’s how it finished.

Bundanoon gave Yerrinbool one hell of a match and they should definitely give the competition a big shake up next year.

Two years ago the Bushrangers team couldn’t win a game but a change in structure has seen a remarkable change in results.

The team would like to thank Jim and Del Maloney from Oxley Timber company and Max and Sue Meuleman from Max Meuleman Earthmoving for sponsoring the team and also the Highlands Golf Club for their support this year.
