A BEAUTIFUL Southern Highlands Saturday afternoon created the perfect conditions for a challenge to the long-standing course record for the Southern Highlands Cycle Club’s Joe De Maria Memorial Time Trial Championship last weekend.

Racing over 14km along Sally’s Corner Road at Sutton Forest, the previous record holder, A-grade rider Richard Vollebregt was keen to defend his record of 19 minutes, 38 seconds set in 2002.
But A-grade rider Daniel Abotomey had other ideas.
Abotomey was looking and feeling good on the day to ride a fast time and at an at an average speed of 43.69 kmh, only 34 seconds separated the two riders at the finish line.
Abotomey beat the previous record by eight seconds in a time of 19 minutes, 30 seconds.
Third and fourth places in A-grade went to Michael Krebs and Ben Blakebrough.
In B-grade only 44 seconds separated the first four riders with Steve Jackson, first and Aaron Dunn second.
Richard Jefford had a few problems at the turn around but recovered well to finish third. Fourth place went to Rob Buchanan.
Alistair McColl claimed C-grade with Robert Wathiss, John Algie and Rob Webb taking the minor placings.
In the women’s, Sally Watt rode the fastest time with an average speed of 35.87 kmh.
Fiona Webb finished second with Fiona Martin third and Rita Mein fourth.
Only 28 seconds separated the top two in the junior class, with Nicholas Lockett beating home Jesse Webb.
Members of the Southern Highlands Cycling Club will turn their attention to criterium racing at Tycan tomorrow.
