 McManus makes Australian Team

McManus makes Australian Team

10 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
JUNIOR cyclists from around the globe will have a new challenge hot on their heels in the form of Highlands cyclist Tirian McManus.

After returning from a serious injury which put him out of cycling for an extended period of time, McManus has returned to the scene with a bang and was this week selected in the Australian team to compete in the World Championships to be held in at Invercargill New Zealand on August 22-26.

McManus gained selection after an excellent showing at the national championships two weeks ago.

Since returning to the sport, McManus said there have been a number of highlights for him, particularly in the past six months.

"Highlights have definitely been winning the Omnium championships at nationals, beating current world champion Caleb Ewan (also from the Highlands) and then winning the gold medal in the Madison with Jack McCulloch, that was a pretty good event to win," he said.

Over the next few months, McManus will be hard at work in preparation for the tough road ahead of him.

Three week training camps will be held in Adelaide over the coming months before the Aussie team jets off across the ditch.

McManus also headed down to the NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) yesterday in order to prepare a proper training program with his coach and fitness instructors.

With his latest successes still fresh in his mind, McManus hopes he can continue on a winning streak.

"Hopefully I'll come back a junior world champion in either the team pursuit or whatever events they put me in," he said.

While his focus will be well and truly on the track this year ahead of the Junior World championships, McManus said there would be opportunities to improve his times on the road.

"I'd like to go good on the road as well this year, try and improve my time trialling and aim at that, but mainly the track this year will be a major focus," he said.

"My coach wants me to go down to Melbourne for a big race down there, the Austral carnival. That's a big race on March 17 so he wants me to go down there and give it a shot."

While McManus said he was confident he could do well, it was going to be a tough battle against some of Australia's best riders.

"I should go pretty well but it's pretty hard competition because it's all the pro athletes from around Australia, the big sprinters and elite athletes."
