ANOTHER year, another national title for Bowral's Tirian McManus.
This youngster is unstoppable.
Despite being only 14 and competing in the under-17 division at the national track cycling junior championships last weekend, McManus smashed an 11-year old Australian record to win a gold in the teams pursuit.
He also won a silver in the teams sprint and came third in the 2000m individual persuit.
What's more is the youngster was unlucky to be disqualified in his pet event, the scratch race.
Despite an early crash, McManus fought-back to be in a medal-winning position coming into the home-straight when he locked handle-bars with another rider and went spiralling out of control up the track.
The commissaire disqualified McManus for dangerous riding which only added to the pain of his bruised right hip, right leg and backside.
Despite the disqualification, McManus said it had been an extraordinary national championships.
"It was my first ever Australian record in an event and we beat it by a fair margin too," he said.
"I was very happy with how everything went and couldn't have asked for much more."
To top it off, the Bowral lad was selected in the seven-rider Australian under-17 men's team for the Oceania championships.
His selection means McManus is headed to Adelaide for training at the AIS next month.
McManus' father, Trevor said his family were not even aware selection for the Oceania games was on the line at the national titles.
"We didn't know anything about the (Australian) team until they made an announcement at the nationals that an under-17s side would be announced that night," he said.
"Tirian is one of only two first-year riders and it's very exciting for him."
Mr McManus said watching is son fall twice in the scratch race was a harrowing experience.
"Tirian wouldn't have had a fall in ages, 12 months or more, and then to see him come off twice was tough," he said.
"After the fall the riders are dealt with by first aid and everything and as parents we cannot get to them to find out if they have been badly hurt or not."
McManus' selection in the under-17 squad means he will train with the Australian under-19 team next month and be one step closer to his ambition of a career in cycling.
