Wright steers Robertson to one-day final berth

16 Nov, 2009 11:28 AM
AN inspired innings from Robertson-Burrawang skipper Nathan Wright kept the side’s unbeaten record intact, as the Spud’s stole victory from Tully Park on Saturday.

Tully needed just 12 runs off the last five overs but two late wickets saw the home team fall 11 runs short of Robertson’s 139.

Wright rode his luck as he was dropped twice and had numerous flighty shots fly just wide of fieldsmen as he hit four fours and a six in a scratchy innings of 90.

Robertson’s’ fourth win of the summer puts them atop the BDCU first grade cup table and secures them a spot in the one-day final with one round to play.

Wright was dropped both before and just after he reached his half-century and was the only batsmen who applied himself on the difficult Kenmore wicket.

Aaron de Jager (12) was the only other batsman to hit double figures as the low wicket and slow outfield made scoring difficult.

Wright made the outfield obsolete as he continuously lofted shots to all corners of the ground, providing Tully with several chances.

Tully bowled well but rued the spurned catches as Robertson was bowled out for 139 with Ryan Day (3-26) cleaning up the tail. Skipper Mik Webber (2-35), Brad Smith (2-34) and Nathan Gilson (3-33) ripped through the Spuds’ middle order.

Tully continued their disappointing year with the bat and lost consistent wickets before some big hitting from Day (46) moved them back into position for another tight victory.

But the home side never looked comfortable at the crease and despite the small total they couldn’t assert any dominance over the tight Robertson bowlers.

The final blow for Tully came as Day edged one behind and just balls later Sam Halder was bowled as Robertson took the first steps in avenging last season’s two-day grand final loss.

The only other Tully player to show any resistance was Webber (22).

While Nathan Wright starred with the bat it was younger brother Mitchell who took the honours with the ball claiming 3-16 off nine overs and dismissing Tully’s top three including dangerman Justin Rowlings for a duck. Spuds James Hart (3-21) and Ben Wilson (3-35) also bowled well.

Nathan Wright said with key players Ben Buffet, Dean Roxbrough and Steve Fairbairn missing it was a great win.

“We played awesome with the team we had. We only had three players over the age of 21,” he said.

Wright said he suffered a brain explosion when he threw away his wicket 10 runs shy of a century and said he didn’t realise he was so close to triple figures.

Wright said Tully fought back after the Spuds took the early ascendancy.

“We had Tully at 6-60 at drinks and then 7-70 and were in the driver’s seat but they came back,” he said.

Having secured a one-day final berth,Wright said this week’s game against fellow heavyweights Workers would be a good test for the team. Roxbrough has missed most of the summer so far with a knee injury and is expected to be out for a further two weeks.
