Robertson expect lively wicket in one-day decider

05 Feb, 2010 09:14 AM
ROBERTSON-Burrawang first-grade skipper Nathan Wright is ready for some chin music in Sunday’s one-day final against Goulburn’s Coolavin/Workers at Lackey Park.

Lackey Park’s young turf wicket, already renowned for a hint of variable bounce, would have been freshened up by the week’s rain and promises some life for the quick bowlers.

Wright has steeled his batsman, warning them to play each ball on its merit and not be afraid.

It’s a good plan in theory, but made harder in practice by the fact Coolavin/Workers have the quickest bowler in the competition in Sam Taylor.

And Taylor will no doubt let it rip in the decider.

Wright said he expected the match to be a far cry from when the two teams last met in November.

“It was a crazy game where we scored 300-odd (off 41 overs) and they weren’t far behind,” he said.

“Our batting’s been going good so I hope it holds up on Sunday.”

Wright’s team is expected to be at full strength for the decider, with opening batsmen Steve Fairbairn and Ben Buffett back on board this week.

The pair missed last weekend’s tonk-fest at Bradman Oval where the Spuddies piled on a massive score against Hill Top.

Wright said he would re-instate Fairbairn and Buffett at the top of the order, even though Dean Roxburgh and Ben Wright lput on 195 for the first wicket last Saturday.

A Robertson win could end the club’s 30-year first-grade title drought.

Most of the players have been in the past two two-day grand finals (losses to Bowral United and Tully Park).

Wright said his team wouldn’t be too nervous on Sunday as their main goal was the two-day title.

“We want to win the lot, of course,” he said. “But we really want to get into and win the two-day final.”

*ROBERTSON TEAM: Nathan Wright (captain), Steve Fairbairn, Ben Buffett, Dean Roxburgh, Aaron de Jager, Ben Wright, Kieran Bishop, Mitchell Wright, Duncan Urquhart, Scott Shepherd, James Hart.
