Moss Vale storm Robertson- Burrawang Spuddies on season’s biggest day

17 Mar, 2010 09:13 AM
THE astonishing undefeated record of Robertson-Burrawang first grade is no more.

In the biggest match of the season, the Spuds were dished up a huge serving of humble pie as Moss Vale’s old heads showed them how to win semi-finals.

Moss Vale captain Dave Edmends (pictured) led the way with 73 on day one, while his ever-reliable quick Troy Brown did the job on day two with 7-61.

Batting first, Moss Vale got to 2-100 before being all out for 188.

Robertson-Burrawang were 2-60 at stumps when an overnight shower freshened up the deck for day two.

The Spuds were all out for 131 as Brown toiled hard from the pavilion end.

Moss Vale were asked to bat again and were all out for 145 late on Sunday when stumps were called.

Edmends said his team’s decision to bat first was crucial to the result.

“Scoreboard pressure is a wonderful thing - it probably adds another 50 or 60 to the total,” Edmends said.

“Smaller totals probably are harder to chase in a way because you expect to get them.

“That being said, we bowled and fielded well and were helped out as Robertson’s batsmen were not as sensible as they could have been.”

Robertson skipper Nathan Wright was gracious in defeat.

The young captain said his team hated losing but hoped there were some lessons learnt.

“Losing is never a good thing,” he said.

“It’s a bit of a wake up call for the boys.

“We sat in the sheds for a while after the game; nothing’s changed much, we still all get along and everything it was just one of those days.”

The win took Moss Vale straight into the decider on March 27/28, while Robertson must beat Tully Park this weekend to make the decider.

The Spuds have added incentive to beat Tully Park this weekend - last year Tully hammered them in the grand final.

First grade’s loss capped a shocking weekend for Robertson as their second and third grade teams also tasted semi-finals defeat.
