A FEDERAL government grant has helped rejuvenate Welby Oval and Mittagong Cricket Club ahead of the upcoming cricket season.
The fence that once sagged around Welby Oval has been replaced, while the two cricket nets are also scheduled for a facelift in coming weeks.
Mittagong Cricket Club secretary Colin Armstrong said he hoped the new facilities would benefit the club.
“Our numbers have been in decline over the past couple of years,” Armstrong said.
“It’s probably down to a number of things like complacency, cost and time sport takes up and even the facilities.”
But Armstrong said Mittagong had addressed the concerns this season and were hoping to rebuild the club by:
o Having what he claims are the lowest fees in the Highlands District Cricket Association.
o Upgrade of facilities at Welby Oval.
o Launch of IN2Cricket, a junior introductory program aimed at five to 10 year olds to be run on Tuesday afternoons.
All clubs must nominate their teams to the HDCA by September 14 and Armstrong said Mittagong would accept registrations up until that date.
He said the club planned to have second and third grade teams and hopefully a number of junior teams.
The junior sides were amalgamated with Hill Top last year because Mittagong struggled to come up with a full compliment of players in any age group.
