SENT into bat in the second grade one-day cricket final at Lackey Park on Saturday Wingello needed a big score if they were going to trouble firm favourites Robertson-Burrawang.
The Tigers didn’t get the start or innings they were looking for and Robertson won their second straight title by five wickets.
Wingello were all out for 124 with Matt Norrie (27) and Ashley Brown (20) the only batsmen to make any real inroads.
Robertson picked up the crucial wicket of Tigers skipper, and the competition’s leading run scorer, Shane Robson (12) early on. Robertson starved Wingello of runs and the Tigers were 2-44 at drinks.
Robertson’s Ben Wilson (3-29) led the bowling attack with captain Jim Thompson (2-19), Yarren Cox (1-47) and James Hart (1-13) also taking scalps. Nathan Ring (0-11) opened the bowling miserly with Hart and affected two run outs.
Eric Haynes (58) was the star of the show for Robertson with Ben McDonald (27 no) steering them home with four overs to spare. Kich (15) and Haynes put on 42 runs for the first wicket before Ring (3) and Haynes put together 40 to get the defending titleholders into triple figures.
Warren Auld (2-14), Robson (2-23) and Trent Hawksley (1-23) were Wingello’s wicket takers.
Thompson said the team was happy with the win but was focused on taking out the two-day title, after losing to Bundanoon in last season’s grand finale.
