CHEVALIER’S Firsts made a great start to its division one ISA campaign with a narrow 71-64 win over 2007/08 titleholders Oakhill at Moss Vale Basketball Stadium on Saturday.
Dominic Lenarduzzi and Brandon Davies lead the way on the scoresheet in what turned into a tough and physical encounter. Chev led at every change and pushed out from a 51-49 three-quarter time lead to win the last period 20-15.
Oakhill became increasingly frustrated at Chevalier’s aggressive man-to-man defence and its bench was called for a technical foul late in the game.
Chev coach Rick Davies was a pleased with the result.
“I was extremely happy that the boys dug deep on defence and this season we plan to stick to man-to-man every game because it gives us opportunities to slow opposing team’s offence,” he said.
“Our offence is getting better but is still something we need to work on. Once all players know their roles on the court it will give us better structure.
“It has been great to have John Hargreaves assist with the boys this year and as you can see they have really improved."
