BOWRAL Little Athletics has been given a huge shot in the arm ahead of the upcoming season with the opening of the new athletics track and facility at Eridge Park in Burradoo.
While the club is still waiting on a storage shed and other bits and pieces, the track has been marked and the first races held.
Children from St Thomas Aquinas gave the new track the thumbs-up on Monday and Bowral Little Athletics president Peter Reed said it was an exciting time for the club.
“We have a perfectly designed area, large enough for a proper facility with lights, a fence and everything else in good time,” Reed said.
“But for the time being, we are very happy to have a new home and a full-sized track for starters.”
The Little Athletics season starts in October and the club is mulling over a change of time from its traditional slot on Friday evening to Saturday mornings.
Reed said the club’s members were being surveyed about the proposed scheduling change although initial feedback had been positive.
“We have found we are clashing with various swimming clubs that are held on Friday nights,” Reed said.
“Also parents struggle to get off work and be able to volunteer at 5pm on a Friday and may be better suited to doing it on a Saturday morning.”
St Thomas Aquinas principal Gary Norris said Eridge Park had been a winner for this year’s school athletics carnival.
“Each year we have difficulty trying to find a suitable place to hold the carnival,” Norris said.
“Last year we had to have the 100-metres races over 80-metres [at Loseby Park].
“We were very impressed with Eridge Park and it was good of Council to have the track ready for us in time.”
The long jump pit and run up should be completed in the near future while Reed hopes to have the shot put and discus ring ready for the season’s opening.
