Council erected fences yesterday as they prepared to make the 22-year-old plaza more inviting, better looking, and safer.
Damaged trees and roots will be replaced with new liquid amber trees, and broken pavers and tiles will be levelled and fixed.
Council will also install new signage and furniture and better lighting.
Although the work zone may look uninviting, shop owners urged people not to be put off coming into the plaza.
Gus Masri from Mezza Bar said the plaza “would be a bit cramped” while the work was going on, but it would be worth it in the end.
“I think the new Corbett Plaza will be a much better place,” Mr Masri said.
“Even though the middle has been closed off, hopefully regular customers will still shop while the work is going on.
Mr Masri said he was happy that Council was making the plaza safer.
“There have been so many people, a lot of older people too, who have tripped and fallen on broken and loose pavers,” Mr Masri said.
