A MEDIA frenzy surrounding Bundanoon’s decision to become Australia’s first bottled water free town has generated more than a $1 million in free publicity for the Southern Highlands, “Bundy On Tap” co-ordinator Huw Kingston told the News yesterday.
Mr Kingston’s phone began ringing at 5am on Wednesday, as soon as the Sydney Morning Herald report on Bundanoon’s campaign hit the street.
By Thursday morning, he had given about 100 interviews to national and international media, including the BBC, The Times, Bloomberg New York and Japanese television, as well as ABC television and radio and all Australian commercial free-to-air news networks.
Mr Kingston said the media was attracted by a “beautiful community story” which touched on world-wide concerns about the bottled water industry and its effect on the environment.
“This has people thinking about the options available to them to get water, and in Bundanoon, there are plenty more to come,” he said.
