ONE of the Highlands' biggest entertainment venues is receiving a face-lift.
Work began on the first stage of Mittagong RSL Club's revamp on January 23 with construction of a new loading dock and installation of a new refrigeration system under way.
The renovations are expected to cost $6.5 million during 18 months of work and are part of the club's new catering master plan which will see a focus on food and beverage service.
General manager Craig Madsen said interior renovations would also take place in the coming months to give the gaming room and bar a similar feel to the lounge room revamp that the club underwent 18 months ago.
"We're taking the Vegas out of the room and making it an extension of the lounge," he said.
Mr Madsen said the club would still be operational once the work moved inside, with the interior renovations expected to cost the club about $700,000 including furniture.
"I believe it (construction inside) will start in May.
"It's about a more contemporary look and feel.
"The front and top of the bar will be redecorated and we'll push the TAB back and extend the bar to service the sports bar."
Mr Madsen said the club was also keen to promote its suitability as a business venue for meetings and conferences.
He said energy efficiency would be a big focus of the revamp, with neon lights in the gaming room set to be removed.
Interior designer Kelvin Murray said there were also plans to refurbish the club's cafe and restaurant.
"Where the club is trying to position itself is that it is not all about gaming," he said.
