Wingecarribee Shire Council is angry that Woolworths developer Fabcot has begun work on the Mittagong Marketplace site before a dispute over conditions of consent is resolved.
Fabcot has lodged an appeal in the Land and Environment Court against conditions of consent imposed on the development.
Sticking points in the conditions have included Woolworths' contributions for footpaths, road improvements, utilities and the Mittagong Main Street Revitalisation Study. Woolworths has also objected to council's 4.5 metre limit for the pylon sign.
In public question time at this week's council meeting, Southern Highland News columnist Mac Cott pointed out that demolition had begun and trees had been felled on the Mittagong Marketplace site at Ironmines Creek.
Works and Planning Committee chairman Nick Campbell-Jones asked whether there was any way in which works could be stopped until the disputed conditions were resolved.
"It's putting us under an enormous amount of pressure, while they're under none whatsoever," he said.
"...If they go ahead, at the end of the day they get their building, with no agreement on parking and traffic," he said.
