A host of Southern Highlands residents were left in the dark days after Sunday's windstorm because of Integral Energy cost cutting, an angry Wingecarribee Shire councillor has claimed.
Cr David Wood told Wednesday's council meeting Integral's manpower in the Highlands was woefully inadequate and has demanded an explanation why the power company has only one emergency crew on standby for the entire region.
"It just isn't good enough and years ago when Berrima County Council controlled electricity, they had several gangs on permanently," Cr Wood said.
"These days, we have double the number of people and more trees but only one gang.
"I'm not blaming the gang that was on, they did their best with what they had but the gangs that were sent up from Sydney meant we were the last cab off the rank.
"It's very simple, we need more Integral gangs up here."
Some areas of the Highlands were still without power late yesterday, four days after the ferocious windstorm wreaked havoc with the region's power supply.
But Integral Energy has strongly rejected Cr Wood's claims, insisting emergency crews responded immediately to the problem.
"That is just not right at all and the Southern Highlands has been our priority from day one," Integral spokesperson Ed Husic said.
"Crews have worked extremely hard to re-establish critical services like water and sewerage and we expect all power supply to be restored tonight (Thursday evening).
"This is the largest storm to hit the Highlands in 10 years and I cannot accept this criticism.
"Our staffing profiles match the needs of each area and when we need extra people we bring them in straight away."
