Wingecarribee stays on for now

Council voted to endorse the name Wingecarribee and that a referendum not be held in an attempt to alter the name.

The motion was moved by Cr Duncan Gair after visiting Kaifeng City delegates were presented with shirts and caps carrying the Southern Highlands logo.

Cr Gair said that while he supported the use of the Southern Highlands as a promotional brand for tourism, the shire name Wingecarribee was rooted in local history.

I've lived here for 55 years and I'm proud of the shire's heritage, he said.

Cr Gair said he was prepared to register his own political party and campaign on a platform of retaining Wingecarribee if necessary.
