Wingecarribee Shire bans bottled water

28 Oct, 2010 01:33 PM
WINGECARRIBEE COUNCIL is now a bottled water fee zone.

Councillors voted unanimously on Wednesday to adopt the new Bottled Water Free Policy for all council operations.

They have also taken the first big step towards applying the same rule to all council-run events by committing to the trial of a portable drinking water filling station at the 2011 Australia Day celebrations.

Councillor Clark introduced a report, 12 months in the making, by paying respect to the work done by the Bundanoon community.

He urged councillors to think of the Bottled Water Free Policy as a "practical way" to achieve the sustainability goals set out in the recently exhibited Wingecarribee 2031 strategic plan.

With that said, the water puns began to flow, with councillor Graham McLaughlin describing Bundanoon as "the little trickle" that attracted worldwide attention.

Mayor Ken Halstead said the report should be supported.

"I have never understood the obsession with bottled water," he said.

Cr David Stranger stressed the Bundy on Tap organisers should be consulted on the best way to implement the ban on bottled water at council-run events.

"There is no need to reinvent the wheel," Cr Stranger said.

Councillor Paul Tuddenham said he would support the trial as long as the results came back to the council for consideration.

WINGECARRIBEE COUNCIL FINALLY PASSES SOMETHING.... HOORAY!!! I am sure the young family from Robertson that has nowhere to live due the massive housing shortage in the area will be over the moon about the fact that even though the councillors reject any applications to increase housing supply in the district, they will not have to endure that most pressing of issues....Bottled Water. When are councillors of the Wingecarribee Shire Council going to lose their arrogance in believing their actions are bigger than market forces? If people don't want bottled water than they won't buy it. Same goes with Housing, if it is not wanted it won't be purchased or rented. Surely it's better to have housing provision and not need it, than to need housing and not have it. Get with the times Wingecarribee councillors and address the real issues.

C'mon council. How about concentrating on your core responsibilities in providing basic services to the community, such as roads, water & waste management ,rather than wasting our ratepayer dollars debating silly 'feel good' issues such as bottled water. Your community expects better.

A great move - Wingecarribee should be congratulated on taking a stand against waste. Let's hope more councils follow suit.

I work in a bottled water business and I am so upset at some people who hate bottled water. We get copped a lot of criticism in our industry. All this talk about waste of money and water by those anti-bottled water "greeny" groups. What next are them greeny groups gonna ban? Bottled Milk? Bottled Beer? Bottled Tomato Sauce? It breaks my heart hearing the bottled water hate groups out there.
