Seniors’ Week showed us all the vast number of things which seniors can put their energies into while having fun at the same time, according to Wingecarribee Shire Council’s Seniors Committee chair, Cr Gordon Lewis.
“The committee worked hard and the week was a success with many events being very popular,” Cr Lewis said.
“One of the things which struck organisers was the amount of untapped talent possessed by our shire’s seniors.”
Cr Lewis said that he hoped new faces would take up the challenge which Seniors’ Week presents next year.
“Let the committee know what you want on the agenda for next year and please come forward and become involved through the committee or your local senior citizens club,” he said.
One of the highlights of the week was The Great Debate which pitched the best speakers from Bowral High School and Chevalier College (The Clearosils) against practiced performers from the ranks of the shire’s seniors.
The Greybeards outclassed The Clearosils on the topic “that age adds value”, with veteran Lily Hepher taking everyone’s breath away. It was a different ball game on the topic “that we should give the Easter bunny myxomatosis”.
Despite the seniors holding the floor with the Easter Bunny in tow, Bowral High’s “Clearosils” stormed home victorious with clever, lucid logic.
“I was most impressed with the young debaters and each year this has been a very entertaining event,” Cr Lewis said.
About one third of the shire’s population fall under the classification of Senior Citizen.
Wingecarribee Shire Council each year makes a financial contribution toward Seniors’ Week in recognition of the important role of seniors in our community.
This year Council allocated a $5000 contribution toward the week’s activities.
“It has been money well spent,” Cr Lewis said.
“From the church service which commenced the week to the Saturday night dance which concluded it, there was a great celebration of energy, interest and achievement.”
The week also featured educational seminars which demonstrated how important it is for seniors to keep up with technology, investment and health issues.
“On behalf of the committee I’d like to thank the cast of hundreds who made the week possible as well as a special thank you to Richard Ruhfus from the Empire Cinema, for his ongoing support each year,” Cr Lewis said.
