A move by the RSL to prop a World War II canon at the gateway to Bowral has been shot down by Cr Larry Whipper who claims it is glorifying war and is bound to backfire.
The proposal, to be heard at tonight's Wingecarribee Shire Council meeting, will see the 25 pound gun, plane propeller and ships anchor move from Bowral Country Club to the town's Memorial Park.
But the left-leaning Cr Whipper has vowed to strongly oppose the move, claiming the war memorabilia is a safety hazard and grossly inappropriate for the park.
"The entrance to Bowral is supposed to be welcoming to visitors and having a gun pointing out to them sends the wrong message," Cr Whipper said.
"The fortress mentality seems to be alive and well here and symbolically it's the wrong thing to be doing.
"Rather than glorify war we should be commemorating the peace-loving advances we have made in civilisation."
Cr Whipper also claimed the monuments would be magnets for small children who could injure themselves by climbing on them.
But RSL sub-branch president John Cummins has defended the bid, calling Cr Whipper's comments an insult to veterans.
"No person that has experienced war glorifies it and it's an insult for Cr Whipper to suggest that," Mr Cummins said.
"This is an historic piece of Australian history and it's been in Bowral for 40 years.
"Links to the past must be preserved for our younger generation to become aware of where we have been and where we should not go in the future.
"Unless we find a place to put it we will lose it."
The memorabilia has to be shifted from the country club due to proposed refurbishments to the clubhouse.
