Voice of youth

06 Apr, 2011 01:00 AM
YOUTH will now be heard, literally, on 2WYR 92.5FM after the station officially launched last week.

More than 50 people turned out for the launch at the Kazcare Educational Facility where the youth station is broadcast.

There are 10 live programs already on the airwaves and it's something station manager Steven Peacock is glad to see come about.

Mr Peacock and board of directors chairman Terry Oakes-Ash have been behind the youth radio initiative from the start.

Both said they were there to see youth connect with youth and are giving them the skills to do it.

"We provide a learning ground for youth to gain exposure and work experience in a media-type organisation," Mr Peacock said.

"We air local, national and international news, music and information relevant to youth ? a source of information on where to go for many issues facing our youth today, such as drugs, depression, suicide, alcohol, HIV, dangerous driving, vandalism, abuse, homelessness, health and bullying."

Member for Goulburn Pru Goward was also behind the station from the beginning and said giving her support wasn't a hard decision.

"I believe it is a priority for the Southern Highlands," she said.

"We all say there is not enough for kids to do in the Southern Highlands, but what it will do is provide kids with a network.

"It's a wonderful opportunity for young people to talk to each other and a way of involving and understanding youth."

Ms Goward said the station would provide Highlands youth with a platform to discuss issues that mattered to them.

Wingecarrribee Deputy Mayor Larry Whipper attended in the absence of Mayor Ken Halstead and said it was an exciting project that would allow young people to express themselves and learn from mentor's around them.

"This is your time (for youth)... and this is your station," he said.
