National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has called on help from the public identifying those responsible for an attack of vandalism at the camping ground at Carrington Falls in Budderoo National Park, near Robertson.
According to NPWS, vandals completely demolished a newly-constructed picnic shelter at the Carrington Falls campground last Saturday afternoon.
The shelter was demolished and the pieces burnt in one of the barbecue fireplaces.
National Parks and Wildlife estimates the cost of the attack to be around $10,000.
NPWS South Coast regional manager Diane Garrood has expressed outrage over the attack, describing it as "selfish and mindless".
"The picnic shelter was relatively new and had been installed as part of a major upgrade of the campground in 2002," she said.
"Since its construction the shelter had been heavily used and was very popular with park visitors as it also provided for disabled use."
Ms Garrood said she the vandalism was particularly upsetting for those who had contributed to the upgrading of the campground.
"This incident is especially disappointing because funds for the construction of the shelter were provided by the former Carrington Falls Reserve Trust and its members, many of who attended the opening of the upgraded campground," she said.
