Tulip Time Comes Alive

26 Sep, 2005 09:29 AM
From marching bands, to Mary Poppins, to dancing kids and cowboys, the Southern Highlands came alive on Saturday as locals and visitors stood side-by-side along Bong Bong Street to watch this year's Tulip Time Street Parade.

According to Tulip Time co-ordinator Debbie Bonett, this year's parade was the best in the event's history and was met with enthusiasm by spectators and participants.

"It was a beautiful day," Ms Bonett said.

"The street parade went really well with more people watching than ever before."

The parade started at the Moss Vale Services Club where classic cars set off at midday, before being met by the rest of the parade participants - including those on floats and foot - who took part in the main event along Bong Bong Street at 1pm.

The parade included the NSW Ambulance Band, colourful dancers from Miss Cay's Ministry of Dance, a Mary Poppins float in which Tourism Southern Highlands employee Sam Nolan, who happens to live in the house where P.L. Travers created everyone's favourite literary nanny, took part.

Many others were among the 20 entrants in this year's parade, which included four car clubs, three marching bands, seven floats and State Emergency Service and Austral Bricks trucks.

The Moss Vale Show Society even brought a real-life bull along with children dressed as cowboys.

"It seemed to be more enthusiastic than previous years, it really was impressive," Ms Bonett said.

"People just really enjoyed it, the kids involved were great, and it was busy in the park."
