TRANSITION Shire Wingecarribee (TSW) will take its campaign for local action to address challenges posed by climate change and peak oil to communities across the Southern Highlands over the next six weeks.
Starting this Saturday, October 4, TSW will host 10 events across the shire as part of its Transition Spring and Information Festival.
The festival is part of a Climate Action Now Wingecarribee (CANWin) push to have Wingecarribee Shire join one of the fastest growing community-scale initiatives in the world.
“Transition Initiative communities recognise that the days of cheap oil are over and we need to discover some new ways of responsibly meeting our needs,” CANWin member Kathy Biddlecombe said.
“We have lost much of our local defence against external shocks. We need to reclaim it before oil shortages really start to pinch, by acting immediately as a community.”
Ms Biddlecombe said each of the 10 Film and Information Festival events would give the community an excuse to get together.
“Neighbours will join to find local solutions to our problem of reduced resilience,” she said.
“The coming challenges are too great for us to face alone, but there is no end to our collective innovation and energy.”
