Tourist flock to Bowral

30 Sep, 2005 07:26 AM
Rising fuel prices have done little to dampen the numbers of visitors to the area.

Thousands are expected to descend on the Southern Highlands as the region springs to life with a plethora festivals and events this Labour Day long weekend.

From the grand finale of the Tulip Time Festival, to the inaugural Festival of Cricket, the Women's Cricket World Cup, the Robertson Spring Festival and the Southern Highlands Wine Show, there is plenty happening.

And, by the middle of this week accommodation bookings through Tourism Southern Highlands' booking service at the Visitors' Information Centre were already showing signs of what a busy weekend lies ahead.

According to Tourism Southern Highlands group sales and bookings spokesperson Renee Eccleston, this October long weekend was proving to be extra busy with so many drawcard events.

"It's certainly busy; it's your typical long weekend in October in that there have been a lot of last-minute bookings," Ms Eccleston said.

Tulip Time Festival co-ordinator Debbie Bonett said she expected up to 15,000 people to visit for the final Tulip Time weekend.

And Festival of Cricket promoter Elizabeth Nichols said Festival organisers hoped to attract a total of about 10,000 people to Bradman Museum on Saturday and Sunday.

Among the many exhibitors at the Festival, , Southern Highlands Food and Wine would be hosting a marquee at the festival showcasing local wines, honey, jams and other goods.

Local wines will also be showcased at the Southern Highlands Wine Show this weekend.

Judging for the Show began yesterday, and awards will be presented at the Southern Highlands Wine Show Dinner at Centennial Restaurant on tonight.

Also on this weekend is the Rotary Country Fair, to be held over three days at the Mittagong Oval.
