A broken-hearted teenager is believed to have sparked a two-hour siege at Mittagong on Saturday afternoon.
Up to 20 police, including Tactical Operations Unit (TOU) officers and negotiators from Sydney, surrounded an Oxley Drive address after they received an emergency call alerting them to a possible siege involving firearms.
It turned out to be a wild goose chase.
Police said a young woman in Newcastle had phoned in after she allegedly received a text message from a young male stating he was holding his mother and sister hostage with a firearm.
Police officers spent 90 minutes trying to make contact with the occupants of the house before finally locating the wanted teenager in Mittagong.
