 Tasty win for cheesemakers

Tasty win for cheesemakers

31 Mar, 2009 08:41 AM
A SOUTHERN Highlands cheese maker has churned out a selection of award winning products.

Mark and Lesley Williams of Robertson's Small Cow Farm have walked away from the Sydney Royal Easter Show with a gold medal for their St Aminay cheese and silver for their Fettice, a Greek-style marinated fetta.

Success in the show has secured a spot for Small Cow Farm in Australia's premiere cheese competition, the Grand Dairy Awards in Melbourne.

The St Aminay, that takes the form of an ash-covered log similar to goat cheese, has also been included in the perpetual Australian Cheese Board trophy.

It was one of only five cheeses entered in the dairy section of the show selected for what is considered by officials as the ideal cheese board.

Other inclusions on the cheese board were two King Island products, a vintage cheese from Warrnambool Cheese and Butter and a goat cheese from Holy Goat in Victoria.

Mr Williams said he was thrilled with the success of his cheese especially the St Aminay, which was a new addition to the Small Cow Farm product list.

"The cheese was named after our daughters, Amy and Renae, and they are incredibly excited about its success.

"Our blue cheeses have always been the biggest sellers in our business but interestingly the Fettice has won silver at the Sydney Royal Easter Show on three occasions since we began our business four years ago.

"It is exciting that we are now gaining recognition for another of our cheeses, the St Aminay.

"We have also previously won silver medals for our Brie."

Mr Williams said success at the Sydney Royal was a great boost to the family business.

"We have already had an increase in sales," he said.

"All major wholesalers closely watch the Sydney Royal awards and then order in over the next few months.

"We are also one of three cheese makers invited to sell our product in the first Sydney Royal produce shop in the produce pavilion. We plan to showcase our fettice through the shop."

Mr and Mrs Williams will join another local producer, Jo Harrington of Bakers Delight in Bowral and Mittagong, on Channel Nine's Mornings with Kerri-anne Kennerley in April.

They will be among six successful exhibitors from the Sydney Royal to showcase their products and tell their story on national television.

Ms Harrington won 19 awards at this year's Sydney Royal for her baked products.

Small Cow Farm cheeses are available through several Highlands retail outlets including the Old Robertson Cheese Factory, Robertson Supermarket, Bowral Cheese Store, Blue Metal Vineyard, Eling Forest Winery, Anchors Fruit and Vegetables and Mrs Oldbucks Pantry, Berrima.

It is also sold through various outlets in Shoalhaven, Canberra and Sydney.
