Street brawlers get zero tolerance

Security staff at Bowral's hotels have "zero tolerance" for rowdy street brawls and are doing their best to tackle the problem, according to the managing director of a local security company.

Pro-Active Security Specialists Managing Director Jason Bates made the comments in response to recent media coverage of continuing weekend street violence in Bowral's main street.

In particular the coverage focused on a 15-man street brawl on Wingecarribee Street on February 12, outside the Grand Hotel. Security staff at the hotel assisted in breaking up the brawl.

However Mr Bates, whose company provides security for both the Grand and Royal Hotels, and Grand Hotel manager Nathan Griggs were keen for the community to know the local hotels weren't tolerating the continuing violence and were working to reduce anti-social behaviour.

Both felt most of the problems were caused by under-age drinkers who had been supplied with alcohol from other sources, or by people refused entry to the pubs.

"The perception that the rough hooligans in the streets are patrons from hotels just isn't true," said Mr Griggs.

The precinct system, which was set up three months ago, allows security guards at both hotels to monitor behaviour in the surrounding area, and to communicate between each other any concerns they may have about patrons.

"(The precinct) assists each hotel in managing people so we know where they've been," said Mr Bates.

"If they play up in one hotel, they won't get in to the other and if they're playing up in the street, they won't get in.

"Any anti-social, unruly behaviour won't be tolerated. We know who the troublemakers are and we choose to move them on."

Both hotels also have a "zero tole
