Woolworths' Mittagong Marketplace development will help to stem a predicted exodus of shoppers to an expanded Stocklands Nowra shopping complex, according to local chamber of commerce leaders.
Developer Leda Holdings plans to treble the size of the Stocklands complex by Easter 2007, adding a supermarket and two major discount department stores such as Big W or Target.
Shoalhaven Mayor Greg Watson has predicted that the shopping centre will draw shoppers from a wide area, including the Southern Highlands.
But Southern Highlands Business Chamber president Terry Oakes-Ash and Mittagong Chamber of Commerce president Charlie Johns said the Mittagong Marketplace, also due to open by Easter 2007, would help to keep shoppers in the local area.
