Station goes unmanned due to ‘efficiency improvements’

13 Nov, 2009 08:48 AM
BOWRAL railway station may be without staff for periods of time during the day on weekdays as part of CityRail efficiency improvements.

The station station was closed between 9.45am and 11am on Tuesday morning, despite the presence of a handful of commuters and two CityRail services.

An explanatory sign on the closed shutter said only that the ticket window was closed and staff would return at 11am.

The station manager was inspecting other stations on the line during this time.

RailCorp said the station staff review would ensure that enough staff were available at each station to “best meet the needs of customers.”

“Eighty-eight percent of customers travel during weekdays, and the majority of these in the morning and afternoon peaks,” they said.

RailCorp spokesman Jon Novakovic confirmed Bowral station was unattended for a “short period

of time.”

“The message saying the station was closed was incorrect and inappropriate,” he said.

“Staff from nearby stations are available to cover temporary absences for each other,” he said.

The new staffing structure began this week and will run on a trial basis into the near future.
