Southern Highlands to show true blue spirit

25 Jan, 2010 08:34 AM
HISTORIC Berrima is ready for another great family event with tomorrow’s Australia Day celebrations sure to fill the Highlands with fair dinkum Aussie spirit.

Festivities at Berrima over the last 10 years have grown to be one of the Southern Highlands’ premier tourist events, with visitor numbers in the thousands each year and on the increase.

Among the attractions is the location, as no other village in the Highlands can lay claim to a more historic and picturesque backdrop in which to celebrate Australia’s national day.

Organiser Colin Gelling said he had seen the numbers grow every year even though Australians are normally laid back about demonstrating their pride and national identity.

With over 60 market stalls (local and interstate) and entertainment for all the family (grand parades, vintage cars, fire engines, fresh produce, face painting, etc), there is literally something for everyone.

The atmosphere is one of a real Aussie family day out with a bit of patriotism and pride in our country thrown in for good measure, Mr Gelling said.

The official part of the day starts at the Historic Berrima Court House Museum at 9.30am, where Mayor Duncan Gair will present the young citizen and citizen of the year awards, and induct new Aussies in the citizenship ceremony.

This is followed by an address by the shire’s Australia Day Ambassador, Highlands historian Linda Emery, then its tea and lamingtons for all.

People are then free to hunt for that allusive piece of craft in the market square or in the more traditional shops around Berrima.

All the old favourites are back, including the dedicated and popular Kids Corner (opposite the main stage).

Jeff Patterson’s amusements will feature dodgem cars, two jumping castles and two merry-go-rounds, while Malcolm Dowling’s Farmyard Nursery is sure to be a crowd pleaser, with children allowed into the compound to pat the animals and have photos taken by mum, dad, or even the grandparents.

Kid’s Corner also has swings and slippery dips and provides shade for the bigger kids as they take a little rest from all the Australia Day excitement.

There is always a great variety of food on the day, from the exotic Turkish delights and Thai, to the great sausage sizzle or steak sandwich, ice creams, coffee and soft drinks, ably supplied by the Rotary Club of the Berrima District.

The grand parade may prove to be the biggest yet as it is opened up to anyone to join in for the very first time.

Assembly for parade participants will be at Berrima Public School at 11am.

For those who do not have public liability insurance, register with Sharon Gluck on 4868 0705. All motor vehicles and tractors in the parade must be road worthy.

The Court House Museum will take people on a walk back in time to the nation’s early colonial days as you wander past 50 wax work models in a full court room scene, and look at a pre-1960 toy display.

People can also grab a bargain from a great array of stalls located at historic Harpers Mansion, which offers items from craft, homewares, jewellery, paintings, books, nursery items, antiques, as well as fresh fruit and vegetables.

By popular request the Harlequin Bush Band will be the main musical act on the main stage during the day, with a welcome return of the Corrective Services Band in the grand parade.

The march will wind its way down from Berrima Public School at 12pm, along the old Hume Highway to finish up at Jellore Street.

Mr Gelling asked anyone who needed more information about the Australia Day celebrations to contact him at the Berrima Courthouse on 4877 1505.

More Australia Day stories appear on pages 4, 5, 11 and 42 in today’s newspaper. The News wishes everyone a great day out and urges everyone to have a fun and safe celebration. Please do not drink and drive.
