Southern Highlands suicide prevention workshop gives hope

24 Aug, 2009 09:26 AM
A GROUP of caregivers attended a suicide prevention workshop in Bowral on Friday.

The Southern Highlands Suicide Prevention Program ran the workshop, with support from Sydney South West Area Health Service and Wesley Mission’s Lifeforce scheme.

Facilitator Peter van Dort said the program was about equipping people to deal with mental health issues.

“We equip participants with skills and frameworks for dealing effectively with people at risk of suicide,” he said.

Wingecarribee Council youth liaison facilitator Michelle Williams said the program offered valuable tools for ensuring people know their importance in the lives of others.

“It is about recognition that you can always make a difference,” she said.

Sean Fielder of Lifeforce said participants should not feel that they had to find the solutions for someone showing signs of a mental health issue.

“Never underestimate your value as a caregiver. We aren’t the answer, we are facilitating the answer,” he said.

The 2010 program will seek ways to address mental health issues at school by involving young people.

The next suicide prevention workshop is on November 5 from 6pm. Contact Peter van Dort for more information.
