Southern Highlands police stations still a worry: Pru Goward

31 Jul, 2009 04:40 PM
GOULBURN MP Pru Goward has raised more concerns over security breaches at Highlands police stations.

Ms Goward has written to NSW?Police Minister Tony Kelly claiming the security code for Bowral, Moss Vale and Bundanoon police stations, which was allegedly given to a member of the public, was not changed for nine weeks after the breach was reported.

Ms Goward said she was initially told the code wasn’t changed within a month of the reported breach.

The member of the public who allegedly had the code was involved in an assault case against a police officer last year. The officer charged over the assault was cleared by the courts in February but was only cleared by an internal police investigation to return to active duty last week.

The officer went to Goulburn commanders over his concerns that the individual who had the code would be able to get access to his residence adjacent to a Highlands police station.

No action was taken against the man who allegedly had the code and Ms Goward wants to know why the officer and his family were put in possible danger for more than two months.

Ms Goward said she was not raising the matter simply to score political points.

“I am extremely reluctant to report any apparent breach of duty in our extremely hard working local police officers and I do not take this responsibility lightly. I am, however, convinced of the soundness of the information regarding this matter,” she wrote to the minister.

“I have already apprised you of the low morale of the police officers in the Southern Highlands patrol of the Goulburn LAC. It is little wonder in these circumstances that morale should be low and stress leave high.”

Ms Goward told the News last week security at Moss Vale Police Station’s holding yard had been breached twice and female officers at Bowral had complained to her about discrimination against pregnant officers and those with young children.

Southern Region Commander Assistant Commissioner Matt Murdoch said the police were taking Ms Goward’s allegations seriously.

He said the NSW Police had responded to requests from Mr Kelly’s officer for a report on the matter and this had been done late last week.

Mr Murdoch said the NSW Police was responding to the minister’s questions in writing.

A?spokesperson for Mr Kelly said the allegations received have been taken very seriously by both the Police and the Minister.

At present the Minister is considering the advice just received from the Ministry, the spokesman said.

Ms Goward said the matter needed to be looked into through an independent investigation.

“The unlawful entry to a police station warrants investigation particularly given that the safety of a family may have been compromised,” she said.
