Smoke ban may hit pub in hip pocket

The Grand Bar and Brasserie publican John Griggs is concerned that Wingecarribee Shire Council could use new anti-smoking laws as an excuse to further increase lease fees on the footpath outside his establishment.

The annual footpath lease will increase from $5501.45 to $6312.75 – or $110.75 per square metre – next financial year.

But council may increase the fees further after voting this week to review its charges on footpath space in the light of anti-smoking laws that come into effect on Monday.
