AT just 27 years of age he already has a string of international prizes and scholarships under his belt, has performed in some of the greatest performance halls on the planet and in the presence of many world leaders.
But top of Simon Tedeschi’s diary for tomorrow is St Jude’s Church, Bowral.
Now based in Boston, Tedeschi returns to Australia three or four times a year, but he was only too happy to stop in the Highlands during his latest visit.
“St Jude’s resident organist Allan Beavis was actually my first headmaster back at St Andrew’s,” Tedeschi said.
“He was always very supportive of my music. We stayed in touch over the years and he invited me to come and give a recital.”
Tedeschi’s first great public performance was at the age of nine when he played a Mozart Piano Concerto at the Sydney Opera House.
Since then his career has soared, and he barely has a spare moment.
His diary is always full of engagements and even Tedeschi doesn’t know how he manages to get to everything sometimes.
While the banal travelling time gets him down he said it was a fair trade for being able to do what he loves.
“I’m a working musician so I don’t have much to complain about,” he said.
Tedeschi’s music takes him all over the world but he said he always looked forward to the chance to play a recital in an intimate venue such as St Jude’s.
“To be able to interact with the audience, to communicate directly with a community, that is a wonderful thing,” he said.
And on Saturday that communication will take the form of a range of musical styles with everything from Bach to Rachmaninov to great jazz works.
Tedeschi said the variety allows him to express all side of his personality.
It also helps to attract a wider audience, with younger faces a common feature in the crowd.
Spreading music to young people, particularly in rural and regional areas, is also an important part of Tedeschi’s role as the roving ambassador for the Australian Children’s Music Foundation.
Simon Tedeschi will perform at St Jude’s Church, Bowral, from 4pm tomorrow. Tickets cost $35 for adults, $27 for concessions, $15 for children and $75 for a family. They will be available form the church office or at the door. For more details go to www.simontedeschi.com.
