THE Highlands community has rallied to support a Bowral youngster as he battles the odds with a malignant brain tumor.
A movie night is planned for tomorrow to help raise money for six-year-old Ethan Smith who was diagnosed with Medullablastoma about six months ago.
The youngster, who is also developmentally delayed, has become an inspiration to all who know him, not least his parents Anna and Michael Smith and his big sister, Elise, 9, who are constantly amazed by their “little trooper”.
His wide smile and affectionate nature have long endeared him to many, but it is his fighting spirit that has more recently prompted the Highlands community to rally support for this pint-sized battler.
Ethan endured a delicate and dangerous operation to remove the tumor from his brain about six months ago and has since undergone 20 rounds of radiation, three courses of chemotherapy and there is more treatment to come.
This includes 10 more rounds of radiation and three additional courses of chemotherapy, which involve almost daily trips to Sydney.
A shunt was also installed in Ethan’s head days before Christmas last year because built up scar tissue, where the tumor was removed, had begun to restrict the flow of fluid around his brain.
The good news at this point in Ethan’s struggle is that the entire tumor was removed in the operation.
His parents hope ongoing radiation and chemotherapy, expected to continue until about May, will stave off a return of the disease.
The movie night will be held at the Empire Cinema tomorrow to raise money for the Smith family.
Guests will be treated to an all-star cast including Julia Roberts, Jessica Alba, Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Garner in Valentine’s Day.
The evening will begin at 6pm and tickets are $20 with funds raised going to the Smith family.
Details and tickets: St Thomas Aquinas Catholic School, Bowral, or the Empire Cinema box office, Bowral.
