This summer threatens to hold one of the worst bushfire seasons in years after early season blazes destroyed four houses in the Picton area on Sunday.
The Bureau of Meteorology has reported the hottest, driest August on record and predicts a hotter than average summer, leading to conditions similar to those experienced before the tragic Ash Wednesday fires in Victoria in 1983.
