SES kept busy

24 Jan, 2005 08:38 AM
Local State Emergency Services (SES) crews were kept busy last week cleaning up after Thursday afternoon's summer storm caused havoc in the region.

The Wingecarribee SES received just under 20 call-outs to clear up the damage after the storm, with crews staying out around the district until well after midnight.

Bowral and the northern villages of Colo Vale, Hill Top, Buxton and Yerrinbool received the most damage, with wind gusts between 51km/h and 78km/h knocking over trees onto fences, houses, and clothes lines, and into driveways.

SES crews were still attending to incidents on Friday morning.

"We had quite a few large trees fall down around the place, but thankfully it was nothing we couldn't handle," Wingecarribee SES volunteer Matthew Crick said.

Wingecarribee SES local controller Anthony Kasoulis said the damage to the region from the summer storm was relatively minor and said the region was lucky to escape the damage seen in other areas of the state.

"It wasn't too bad at all, considering some of the storms we've previously had in recent months," he said.

As well as knocking down trees, the winds also caused power lines on Oxley Drive to fall down; restricting traffic flow through the area while energy crews attended the scene.
