Sentence for scissors attack not tough enough

23 Nov, 2007 10:00 AM

Welby resident, Jess Briggs, a victim of death threats and a scissor attack in Batemans Bay on November 14, says the 20-month jail sentence given to her attacker was not long enough.

Allen Carriage, 29, of Catalina, was jailed on Friday for a minimum 15 months after he pleaded guilty to two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm (AOABH), assault, malicious damage and breach of an apprehend violence order (AVO). The second AOABH related to another violent assault on September 1.

One of the two women attacked, aged 20, has moved out of the area because she was living in fear, said she had thought she would die when Mr Carriage attacked her on Wednesday. He, the 20-year-old and her 18-year-old friend, and another man, had been drinking together at about 11pm when an argument broke out.

"We told him to leave, he went out the front door then smashed a panel in the (locked) front door, unlocked it, and come in with the pair of scissors and threatened me and my friend,” said Ms Briggs.

"She jumped in front of me to save me from being stabbed."

Ms Briggs said she went into shock and couldn't remember how Mr Carriage was made to leave, but said they were unable to call for help until 3am.

"He had us in there for a few hours. He was bashing my friend, beating her up; I was trying to stop him but I couldn't because he had the scissors.

"(I thought) ... he was going to kill us, it was lucky there was someone else there. I think he talked Allen into leaving."
