A public meeting to oppose Wingecarribee Shire Council's plan to construct a new distributor road through East Bowral's last remaining open green space will be held on Saturday.
The self-proclaimed Ratepayers Action Group says it has been fighting the plans for the past three years, having received an understanding from council the road would never be built.
Council wants to build a one kilometre stretch of road to link Old South Road with Boardman Road while diverting a watercourse at the same time. But Kevin George from the Ratepayers Action Group said many residents in East Bowral were led to believe by council officers the road would never be built and bought properties overlooking the green belt on that understanding.
"I was told by a council officer in 1999 that this road would never be built and, along with a neighbour who was given a similar understanding, we have signed statutory declarations to that effect," he said.
"A professional traffic study of East Bowral also found no need for a northern distributor road with Emily Circuit due to take up to 7000 vehicles a day when it is only currently taking 3000 vehicles a day.
"It is important to note that 173 homes and more than 800 people will be cut off from this new road because they will not be able to access it.
"This is the last green space in East Bowral and this will spoil the whole subdivision."
While Mr George said residents were not against plans for recreational facilities on the land, he suggested a better alternative for the new road would be to follow the fence line rather than split the open space in two.
He claims the vast majority of the people the road is meant to serve do not want it and have declared this to council in the form of 96 individual letters and submissions.
"This is pretty important to us and we're expecting about 100 people at the meeting on Saturday, while all the councillors, general manager David McGowan and Mayor Phil Yeo, have been invited to attend," Mr George said.
According to council the project has been planned since the land was first released in 1985 with the 20-hectare site being transformed into a significant asset for the community.
The plans include construction of playing fields, two wetlands for stormwater management and construction of a natural-type meandering drainage channel.
The public meeting will be held on the front lawn at 1 Rowland Road, East Bowral, starting at 11am.
