Residents sickened by wombat killings

27 Oct, 2005 03:32 PM
National Parks and Wildlife is appealing for assistance to help find those responsible for dumping five dead wombats in a Bundanoon street.

According to manager of education with the South Coast and Highlands regional office of National Parks and Wildlife, Pat Hall, five dead wombats have been found dumped in Quarry Road in Bundanoon over the last five weeks.

"Three of the wombats had been found with a hole in the head. We're not sure whether they were caused by a bullet or an arrow. We're not sure how the other two died," Ms Hall said.

"We've examined the bodies and they were all healthy wombats before they died."

Ms Hall said each of the wombats had been dumped in the same section of road, with two of them being placed around a wombat burrow.

"The residents in Quarry Street are all very concerned," she said.

"It's very hard to tell who is responsible, because the bodies were in such a poor condition.

"If it continues then we will be carrying out autopsies on the bodies to try to establish the why and how."

Ms Hall pointed out there are severe penalties for anyone caught killing wombats.

"Wombats are protected by the National Parks and Wildlife Act. It is illegal to kill them," she said.

"We understand that there are instances where people will have problems with wombats, but those people should contact National Parks and Wildlife and have a ranger assess their situation.

"Sometimes it will be possible to have them relocated."

Wombat co-ordinator with Wingecarribee WIRES Gaylene Parker said she had been sickened by the acts.

"It is absolutely appalling. What has been going on is absolutely macabre," she said.

Ms Parker said residents in Quarry Road had been unnerved by the killings.
