Highlands turned out in force at the official launch of the 2008 The Cancer Council Relay for Life at Bradman Pavilion on Thursday night.
More than 60 people attended the event to support the second edition of the Relay for Life to take place in March, after the huge success of 2006.
Last year saw the Southern Highlands Relay for Life raise $241,000 for the Cancer Council, with the funds aimed at supporting treatment for cancer patients and research for future prevention.
Among those to attend the launch were Cancer Council chief executive officer Andrew Penman, former member of the Southern Highlands and Southern Highlands Relay for Life ambassador Peta Seaton, Southern Highlands Relay for Life committee co-chairs Michele Scamps and John Sharp, and cancer survivor and guest speaker Nicky Goodall.
Dr Penman highlighted the Cancer Council’s work to prevent cancer.
“I strongly believe this is a battle worth fighting, and one we can win,” Dr Penman said.
“The Relay for Life is a flagship event for the Cancer Council that is organised by 60 communities across the state.
“The community engages with it because they are socially aware of the threat of cancer.
“The 2006 Relay for Life was a highly successful event, and people were amazed at the widespread support for it.”
Special guest speaker Nicky Goodall said his experience with cancer was responsible for many positives in his life that he now values.
