Region's pubs pass on beer excise cut

27 Apr, 2001 08:26 AM
Southern Highlands pubs have made regulation cuts to beer prices following a reduction in the excise introduced on April 4.

Beer drinkers now save about 10c per glass of beer, with all local pubs complying with the new cut.

Grand Hotel Proprietor John Griggs said he had not seen any problem in the Highlands with the beer excise crackdown, despite the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission survey which showed 55 per cent of clubs had not passed on the reduction.

"Most people adjusted their prices within a week or two of the announcements being made," Mr Griggs said.

The Southern Highland News contacted local pubs and hotels last week and found that prices of schooners had dropped 10c, with some prices remaining unchanged as they had absorbed costs of initial excise rises.

ACCC chairman Professor Alan Fels urged anyone who hadn't seen a price reduction or a rise to contact the ACCC.

"Beer prices over the bar should have fallen following the excise reduction on draft beer from April 4 2001," he said.

"Whilst there may have been some stock overhang immediately after the excise reduction, and some stock build-up for Easter, the ACCC believes most clubs and pubs should have cleared the higher excise product by now.

"The ACCC is already checking clubs and pubs it found to have had higher than expected prices to see if there had been a shift in pricing.

"Drinkers who haven't seen a shift downwards on the price - or have seen a rise should call the ACCC complaints telephone line on 1300 302 502.

"These complaints will be followed up by the ACCC staff."
