The State Government has been slammed for the way it has handled the organisation of a public meeting into rail services for the region.
Southern Highlands MP Peta Seaton said long suffering rail users in the Highlands have been given another dose of Carr-Costa arrogance in the State Government's latest ploy to pretend to care about local rail services.
"After 9 years, this is further proof that Labor is drunk with power and arrogance," said Member for Southern Highlands Peta Seaton.
Ms Seaton said Michael Costa must explain why a proposed public meeting called by rail authorities for tonight at Picton, was kept secret until the last minute .
She also questioned why the well-known local rail user group Southern Highland Action Group (SHAG) was not contacted or consulted in any lead-up arrangements.
Ms Seaton said local rail users, represented by SHAG have been seeking a meeting with the Transport Minister Michael Costa for months, and have lodged a 2,500 strong petition in Parliament seeing retention of threatened rail services.
"Yet rail users find out about the meeting through rumours last Friday, and flyers distributed by some station staff on Monday giving people less than 3 days notice," Ms Seaton said.
"This is an insult and a disgrace, and Minister Costa is hiding behind his paid henchmen.
"It appears this meeting is all about telling local rail users what the Government has decided to do with the new rail timetable and service cuts – with no consultation with rail users."
Ms Seaton said the meeting was still shrouded in secrecy, with the irregularities and lack of courtesies in normal public meeting procedure.
She said there was no published agenda, so attendees could not prepare properly for the meeting ; there were no names or titles of Government officials attending, proposed format, or Chair; only 3 days notice of the meeting was given; it was scheduled for a day and time when Parliament will be sitting, making it potentially impossible for the State MP to attend; and the SHAG group was rudely ignored, and only finding out by accident the meeting was on.
Further, Ms Seaton said Michael Costa's office refused to give her information by phone when she enquired on Monday morning this week, asking for information .
She also said that when she phoned the advertised information number early Monday afternoon, Rail Corp's 'community relations' officer told her she had to speak to Helen Willoughby, the head of Rail Corp ‘communications' about her questions.
"This is Carr Government bully-boy tactics at their worst, and every rail user, every friend of a rail-user, every parent or child of a rail-user will have every reason to believe they have been used and abused by a power-drunk State Government in its 9th year of power."
Ms Seaton said she would seek special leave from Parliament on Wednesday night to attend the meeting and help local people defend Southern Highlands' rail services.
n The meeting is being held tonight at the Wollondilly Shire Hall, 40-60 Menangle Street, Picton, starting at 7.45.
