Joadja residents have urged Wingecarribee Shire Council to impose stricter controls on the Boen Boe Piggery at Joadja Road.
Eleven objectors have made submissions on a Boen Boe development application currently before council, expressing concern about dust, noise, and visual amenity, odour, potential impact on water quality, flora and fauna, and issues associated with the disposal of dry straw bedding, including traffic.
Boen Boe has lodged the development application for eco-shelters and sheds, to allow a change from underfloor effluent disposal to dray accommodation with straw bedding, and to dispose of effluent and spent straw on Boen Boe and by selling to owners of other properties. Council is also considering an application for additional structures erected without building approval.
On behalf of objectors, resident John Miller presented Wednesday's council meeting with a list 17 of proposed conditions for approval of the Boen Boe application.
Conditions include that Boen Boe not increase the number of sows above 600; and that spent straw should be disposed of outside the catchment area, as required by the Sydney Catchment Authority;
The application also includes conditions that council appoint a consultant at Boen Boe's expense to undertake six-monthly inspections to ensure the piggery complies with the conditions of consent; that effluent not be spread on site; and hat all solid bi-products leave the property in sealed containers to reduce odour, contamination and protect the surrounding environment.
