05 Apr, 2004 10:03 AM
Bundanoon was the place to be on Saturday as they celebrated the 27th Annual Highland Gathering, the Bundanoon is Brigadoon festival.

Over 15,000 people attended this well known and highly regarded Scottish gathering.

With the beautiful morning sunshine, crowds enjoyed watching 24 pipesand drum bands on parade with more than 600 band members performing.

"Not many little villages in NSW can bring in 15,000 visitors in one day," proud organiser Alaistair Saunders said.

"And they're not just spending their money at Brigadoon, but across the whole shire."

Also in the parade were Clan members, girl guides and the students of Bundanoon Public School twirling ribbons which were on sale after the parade to raise money,

The crowd participation was fantastic, with visitors clapping to the music, locals proud of being born in Bundanoon and others proud to be a Scottish descendant.

Once the mass pipes and drum bands and the crowd gathered their positions all around Bundanoon Oval, the bands carried out their performances for the crowd.

The opening ceremony commenced with the national anthems of Australia and Scotland performed by Dawn Wilson.

Then the 27th Gathering was officially opened to its thousands of spectators.

"It was one of the best for years, and the weather was certainly the best we've had for ages," Mr Saunders said.

The Chieftain for the day, Malcolm Kenneth Murray, the 12th Earl of Dunmore,Viscount of Fincastle, Lord Murray of Blair, Moulin and Tilmet was present with his wife, Joy.

Warren Glase, President of the Bundanoon Highland Gathering along with Pat Green showed the Earl and his wife around, introducing them to the other Clan members.

Throughout the day the Highland Cavaliers from Sydney performed for the crowd, and for the dog enthusiasts, the Southern Highlands Kennel and Obedience Club held two sessions.

Mr Saunders said the obedience club had a very loyal following each year.

There were over 130 speciality stalls ranging from food, clothing, plants, to the Edinburgh Tattoo and Clan information tents.

The Scottish games are always a highlight at Brigadoon as visitors can participate in these competitions.

Women and men joined in the Caber Toss whilst children participated in the Haggis Toss, Egg Toss and Fergie Stones games.

Another highlight of the day was the David Huxley's "Tartan Warriors" Lifting the Bundanoon Stones of Manhood.

The first contestant up for the challenge was Steve Diffey who only managed three stones. Michael Sidiono tried to lift the fourth stone but to no avail.

Craig Reid, the third contestant was racing through the challenge, but unfortunately the fourth stone fell to the ground, and therefore, since he had to pick it up again and place it on the barrel, seconds past by before he successfully placed the fifth stone on the barrel in 26.4 seconds. Derek Boyer, last year's winner lifted and placed five stones in 21.63 seconds and was declared this year's winner.

Bundanoon is Brigadoon will be held on April 9 next year.
