Possible Telstra tower has Bundanoon residents worried

13 Sep, 2010 10:35 AM
THE prospect of a Telstra tower looming Bundanoon township has some residents concerned about the amenity of the surrounding area.

Harry and Annie Pidgeon, whose house is 70 metres away from the proposed site, are worried about tower for several reasons: the social and environmental aspects; the health affects; and the economic impacts.

The proposed location is around 100 metres away from the town’s playground and swimming pool area while the school and preschool are within 300 metres.

Mrs Pidgeon added that until there is definitive evidence about the effects of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) transmissions, which the tower will emit constantly, she believes that the scientific precautionary principle should be evoked, in which action should be withheld where there are reasonable grounds for concern.

The Pidgeons are also concerned about the lack of public consultation to date and are critical about the Bundanoon Club putting financial gain ahead of their community responsibility.

Bundanoon Club Manager Peter Kellond said the matter was raised with members at the Club’s meeting a couple of months ago, but there had not yet been a formal proposal.

“We have signed a Heads of Agreement to allow Telstra to investigate the suitability of the site, but we are still waiting for their decision about where they want to position the tower,” Mr Kellond said.

He added that the dire state of the Club’s finances, and the need for better mobile reception in Bundanoon would mean that the Club will seriously consider any offer from Telstra to lease the land for the tower.

Area General Manager for Telstra, Pat Nolan, confirmed that the project is in its very early stages.

“We know there is a need to improve services in the town and the site at the Club is one under consideration. There has been no final decision made as to the location or design of the tower.”

In response to the Pidgeons’ comment that the tower would be better sited on a higher location away from the town, Mr Nolan said that the facility needs to close to the signal black spots.

Both Mr Nolan and Mr Kellond said that once Telstra has made a definite decision on leasing the site from the Club, the matter would then need to be submitted to Council and would be open to public debate.

YES about time we got a tower here for mobile reception!!!!! I hope this goes ahead on this proposed site as it would benefit so many people. Why is it that people who come from the city areas and have been living in this sort of environment for years, come to a village such as Bundanoon and object to this proposal? I think it's call progress isn't it? If you don't like it.....go back to where you came from. WE ARE ALL FOR THIS PROPOSAL ON THAT SITE.!!!!!

For safety we need better reception in Bundanoon. There are so many 'dead' spots it makes us like a Third World Country. Older people can carry their phone , knowing that help is just a call away. My 90-year-old mother, in Sydney, will not leave the house without her phone! As Spock says in Star Trek: "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few".

I agree we need a little progress here,if you dont have a 3G phone its useless to try and get reception. I love Bundanoon but can see we do need to get some better technical items here for all our sakes. In the event of bush fires all can be reached by mobile phone but not here!!

With so many people these days using mobiles (young & old) we certainly need to be able to use it when we want to. I sit my phone on a fence post to get reception and dare not move it when i'm talking as it drops out. You cant rely on mobile reception in Bundanoon . What if there was an emergency and your mobile phone was the only means of contact? With the proposed tower on this site it will benefit all mobile users and the clubs financial situation. How often do you get asked for a mobile number only to answer "sorry we don't have very good reception in Bundanoon". Do the objectors have mobile phones - probably NOT !

We need a better mobile & internet service in Bundanoon and no we do not want a monstrosity erected anywhere but as usual a small minority have started a scare campaign with not one real fact getting in the way. We need to ask Telstra exactly what the tower will look like, I believe it is nothing more than a pole with an aerial at the top not the giant structure depicted by the objectors. If it is a reasonable structure and it helps the club to remain then lets do it.
